Who is Susan J Bruce?

Well, I’m not really a black-haired, dreadlocked pirate but my husband, Marc, and I love to have cosplay birthday parties. This photo is from our Talk Like a Pirate party a couple of years ago.

So, if I don’t regularly rock the pirate look, what do I do, and why?

I read a book once that suggested if we want to see who we are and who we are meant to be, we should look back to the things we loved to do as a child. I spent my young years reading, drawing, and collecting stray animals, so it’s no surprise now I’m older I do the same kinds of things. I worked for many years as a veterinarian and today write the kind of books I love to read—tales filled with mystery, suspense, adventure and love—for all ages.

My debut YA novel, Running Scared, won the 2018 Caleb Prize in the ‘unpublished’ category. That novel is now published and in the wild. For the last two years I’ve been working on my new Ruthless-the-Killer mystery series.

The first book, Dead Ahead, is an off-beat Aussie cozy mystery, with a dash of rom-com.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. And yes, it’s invaded by animals.

My veterinary background pervades my writing and animals run, fly or crawl into nearly all of my stories.

It also invades my art. I still love drawing and painting animals and paint pet portraits on commission.

Some random things…

I was born in Scotland and so am genetically programmed to enjoy:

  • Bagpipes
  • Irn-Bru
  • Oatcakes
  • A wee dram of single malt scotch whisky
  • And men in kilts (Note to self: buy Marc a kilt).

However I’m not so fond of:

  • Haggis
  • Tripe
  • Deep-fried Mars Bars
  • Or freezing cold winters.

I do love the beauty of the landscape and the warm hearts of the people of my homeland. And highland cows. I love highland cows!
